BIA is dedicated to the evolution and continued growth of the building industry, the improvement of building material and products through research and development, and providing housing to families of all income levels.

Committed to serving their members by providing them with programs, services, education, networking opportunities, information and political action that will enable them to succeed in their individual businesses and to advocate and promote the preservation and enhancement of the building industry as a benefit to those who earn their livelihood from it and to society as a whole.








The NAHBR Professional Remodelers Council of BIA strives to increase the image and competencies of those members of BIA involved in the remodeling of homes and other buildings, so that they may be recognized as professionals by the public.

The objectives of the NAHBR Professional Remodelers Council are to conduct activities and educational programs which will promote the professionalism of its members.

NAHBR Professional Remodelers Council encourages its members to deal fairly with its customers and each other, and to, wherever possible, resolve disputes by the use of mediation and arbitration and wherever possible to avoid litigation.








In order to qualify for the title Professional Master Remodeler, BIA recommends remodelers meet the following conditions:

  • Be a member in good standing of BIA, MAHB (Michigan Association of Home Builders) and NAHB (National Association of Home Builders).
  • Have been actively engaged in the building/remodeling business for no less than two years.
  • Have satsfactorily completed the construction, sale or major remodeling job of no less than five homes.
  • Have satisfied all licensing requirements.
  • Provide, upon request, a list of previous buyer references.
  • Conduct a walk-through inspection and make agreed upon corrections in a reasonable period of time.
  • Keep informed, through information provided in Association publications, at Association meetings and seminars, of new building materials and practices, the latest building and other technical data.
  • Participate in ongoing expansion of their knowledge and technical expertise through Association sponsored or other programs, to advance their professionalism.
  • Maintain appropriate insurance coverage for both workers compsenation and public liability.
  • All builder/buyer contracts shall be in writing, including all terms and agreements.
  • Conduct all development and construction activity in a manner which encourages protection of the environment.








CGR stands for Professionalism, Experience, and a Commitment to Quality
The Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation assures you that your remodeler:

  • Has met NAHB prescribed standards of business practice.
  • Has a proven track record of sucessfuly completing projects.
  • Has completed relevant educational requirements.
  • Pledges to uphold the CGR Code of Ethics.

In order to maintain the CGR designation, all CGRs must re-certify every three years after their initial certification. Recertification requirements include attending remodeling or business related seminars, trade shows, and educational programs, as well as providing insurance verification. Obtaining other professional designations also counts towards recertification. Equally important are letters of recommendation from suppliers and financial institutions.








The CAPS designation is a reliable way to identify professionals to modify your home. This program was developed by AARP and NAHB.

CAPS certified remodelers specialize in:
  • The unique needs of the older adult population
  • Aging-in-place home modifications
  • Solutions to common barriers.
  • Common remodeling projects
